Two-story homes create a real challenge when it comes to outdoor living. The back door opens up on the second floor, and suddenly you've got this awkward drop to the ground with no usable space in between. A lot of homeowners just leave it - and end up with a backyard they barely use.
Here's what we built instead. An elevated upper deck off the second floor with a clean white railing system, giving the homeowner a proper outdoor space right off their main living area. Solid understructure, good proportions, and a finished look that fits the house instead of fighting it.
What we really like about this setup is what happens underneath. The lower level stays open and accessible - it's covered, ground-level, and connected directly to the first-floor sliding door. That means two completely separate outdoor zones off the same house. One up, one down, both useful.
The structural columns tie the two levels together visually and keep everything feeling intentional rather than slapped on. The composite decking on the lower platform pairs with the white trim details, which match the home's existing exterior. Nothing about this looks like an afterthought.
This is exactly the kind of hardscaping and outdoor living work we love doing. It's not just about building a deck - it's about figuring out how a family actually moves through their home and designing something that fits that.
